Paris – Day 31

Goodness. It’s a month since I got here.

Today the 7.51 bus became the 7.50 bus, and I think I have solved the mystery of why sometimes it doesn’t appear – it is because it has, and then disappeared, before it’s time. Gives a new meaning to “waiting for the bus”. One must anticipate it – it is not sufficient to be punctual.

We have an internal audit over today and tomorrow at work. My boss showed these three lovely-looking ladies over the office, and she showed them the basement, and she said she was very impressed with my work.

My boss is very tired and very jetlagged but got through today like a trooper. It’s so good to have her back. I missed her and her energy.

I got through some more trainings today, briefly updated my boss on the state of affairs, and otherwise did the usual admin. I had to take photos of the stools for our interior designer, and I also measured the IT room so that we can get shelves for it for when we tidy it next week. I am the Great Organiser. Fear me.

On the way home, I took the wrong bus, which meant I had to walk for half an hour from the terminus to get home. It was no idle journey, though. On the way, I started listening to Lingthusiasm, a linguistics podcast. Their first episode is about why a universal language wouldn’t work, exploring attempts that have gone before, and what examples exist now. What I got from it is that there is no perfect, unbiased conlang, because anyone who creates one is naturally going to be biased in some way. I haven’t finished the episode, but I look forward to. I’ve also just read that they also did an interview with Randall Munroe, the author of the What if? books and xkcd, and that is definitely on my listening list now.

Alas, this evening has ended with my 1) making a faux pas at dinner which I shan’t live down in a hurry, like the massive overthinker that I am, and 2) having to wrestle with PayPal and my bank and currency exchange generally with regards to paying rent. I still have no bank account here, which is ridiculous, I know, considering that non-GBP transfer fees are no tiny matter, and I have had a month to sort this for my sake and my company’s, and now, as it turns out, my landlady’s.

So, tomorrow I shall try and fix something. Temporary measures only last so long before they come back to bite you. You want long-term gain? You need long-term investment, or insert inspirational quote about making-a-proper-effort-so-you-don’t-(consequently)-die here.

Anyway, friends, I shall love you and leave you. I am feeling somewhat better in spirit, although my head is now feeling somewhat worse, perhaps with my cold deciding to remind me of its existence, so I must rest. I will be back tomorrow, with progress. All my best wishes to you ❤
